Thenceforward time ceased to exist for me. I will need to have lain in a dull,
torpid condition with occasional intervals of extra definite
consciousness. I was dimly aware that I used to be mendacity in a mattress in a large,
gentle room by which there have been other folks, and which I acknowledged as a
hospital ward. But principally my mind was a clean, aware only of excessive
bodily discomfort and a dull headache that never left me a second of
ease.
How lengthy I continued on this state, indifferent to, and hardly aware
of my surroundings, however at all times restless, weary and suffering, I don't have any
idea (excepting from what I used to be advised afterwards). Days and nights passed
uncounted and unperceived, and the reminiscence of that period which stays is
that of a vague, interminable dream.
The awakening got here, I feel, somewhat immediately. At any rate, I remember a
day once i, myself, was conscious of a change. The headache and the
restlessness had gone, and with them the muddled, confused state of mind.
I was now clearly conscious of what was going on round me, although too
listless to take specific notice, lying still with my eyes closed or
half-closed, in a state of utter exhaustion, with a sensation of sinking
through the mattress. Vaguely, the concept that I used to be dying presented itself; however
it merely floated by way of my thoughts with out arousing any curiosity. The
effort even of pondering was beyond my powers.
In the afternoon of this day the physician made his periodical go to. I
was aware of droning voices and the tread of many feet as he and the
little crowd of scholars moved on from mattress to bed, now passing farther
away and now coming nearer. Presently they reached my bed, and i opened
my eyes sleepily to take a look at them. The physician was a short, pink-confronted
gentleman with upstanding silky white hair and vibrant blue eyes. At the
moment he was examining the chart and case paper and discussing them with
a tall, handsome younger man whom I acknowledged as one of the regular
disturbers of my peace. I took no observe of what they were saying until he
handed the chart-board to a white-capped lady (another of the disturbers)
with the remark: "Well, Sister, the temperature is beginning to remit,
but he doesn't seem to be getting any fatter."
